Hurricane Michael Upgraded To Category 4 As Storm Approaches Florida

Michael strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane early Wednesday.

The storm is expected to touch down in Florida's Panhandle later today.

At 8:00 a.m. Wednesday, the eye of Michael was about 90 miles southwest of Panama City, Florida with winds at 145 miles per hour, traveling north at 13 MPH.

Hurricane warnings are in effect from the Alabama-Florida border to the Suwanee River while Tropical Storm watches and warnings extend as far south as Tampa Bay, as far west as Mississippi and even from near Jacksonville, Florida all the way to North Carolina.

Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 175 miles.

Some additional strengthening is possible today before Michael makes landfall in the Florida Panhandle or the Florida Big Bend area.
