Hurricane Irma Still Wreaking Havoc On Keys Canals 8 Months After Storm

Some eight months after Hurricane Irma, canals and waterways in the Florida Keys are still slammed with loads of trash.

Monroe County Officials say that the cleanup of the canals has been slow, only 16 of the 500 total so far taken care of, mainly due to budgeting issues. The entire cleanup rings up at about $52.6 million.

Some canals have fully damaged mangroves, causing massive seagrass die-off, while others contain roofs, docks, boats and RV's.

So far only 16 of the 500 canals have been fully cleared.

An estimated 97,000 cubic yards of awnings, roofs, downed trees, RVs, broken docks and other debris blocking canals not only for boats but manatees and other marine life are still waiting to be taken care of.
