Fourth graders from Watkins Elementary School recite Martin Luther King Jr.'s 1963 speech at the Lincoln Memorial.
America is reflecting on the legacy of civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
FACT: Martin Luther King Day was created in 1983 with legislation signed by President Ronald Reagan.
The movement to honor Dr. King's birthday actually began 15 years earlier, in the days after his assassination in 1968. The first federal MLK holiday went into effect on January 20th, 1986, though several states resisted the idea.
In 1999, New Hampshire became the last state to accept the holiday.
