WANTED: Florida Needs Teachers

(Leesburg, FL)  --  Florida schools are having trouble finding new teachers and the state's education commissioner is blaming some of the old ones.

At a meeting of the Florida Board of Education in Leesburg yesterday, Pam Stewart said current teachers who could steer promising students into the profession are telling them to look elsewhere.  Sumter County School Superintendent Richard Shirley said teachers are discouraged because they have to deal with a myriad of testing requirements, accountability programs and salary limits.

Shirley added that Florida colleges and universities have never produced enough graduates to meet the demand and it's getting worse.
