A tropical storm in the eastern Atlantic Ocean is on the verge of becoming a hurricane. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami say Irma is packing top winds of 70 miles an hour.
As of 5 a.m. Eastern time, the tropical storm was about 590 miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands, moving west at about 12 miles an hour.
The forecasters say Irma is likely to become a hurricane later today.
