International High School of New Orleans (IHSNO) senior Dennis Barnes has set a new national record by receiving offers from 125 colleges and universities and a total of over $9-million in scholarship offers. Barnes applied to 200 schools across the country and plans to announce his college decision on May 2nd. This achievement breaks the previous record documented in the Guinness Book of World Records of $8.7-million in scholarships to a student in 2019.
Barnes submitted college applications in August, and IHSNO says more decision responses are still coming in. His goal is to reach $10-million in offered scholarships by the end of the month. He has a cumulative GPA of 4.98, holds leadership positions in the National Honor Society, and is fluent in Spanish, having received special recognition from Spain’s government for his achievements.
As far as what he wants to study in college, Barnes says he’s going to pursue a dual undergraduate degree in computer science and criminal justice. And he’s already well on his way with two years of dual enrollment at Southern University of New Orleans under his belt. Barnes offers this advice for other seniors applying to colleges and scholarships: “The road to a successful future is to plan ahead, network with the collegiate partners, and know that if you can see your vision, you can achieve your goal."
