Marlins To Distribute One Millionth Meal Amid Pandemic

The economy may be improving, but many South Floridians are still feeling the effects of the more than year-long pandemic.

This afternoon outside loanDepot park, the Miami Marlins in partnership with Feeding South Florida will distribute their one millionth meal as a part of their Home Plate Meals Relief Fund.

As the Executive Director of the Marlins Foundation, Rocky Egusquiza has seen the need over the past year.

"There's many folks that never thought they'd see themselves in this type of situation. Sometimes they're embarrassed to come and ask for help, but when we need help, we need to ask, we need to support each other, and it's been amazing to see the community comes together."

She says she's been amazed by the gratitude of families. "We've had families that have come to take food because they need it for their families, and then the following week, two weeks later come and say 'can I volunteer; can I help someone else because I know what an impact and what a difference it made to me'."

About 500 boxes will be handed out during today's 1:00 p.m. drive up event at the Humana Lot at 1390 Northwest 5th Street.
