A bus driver in Florida was on her route on the first day of school when she saw a toddler wandering alone near a road. Brevard County Public Schools reports that Rene Carpenter noticed the boy, who was only wearing a diaper, at the end of a driveway with no adults in sight.

She honked to try to scare him back up the driveway, but it didn’t work, so a teaching aid got off the bus and he jumped right into her arms, Carpenter recalls. They called the police and kept the tot on the bus while they waited. Brevard County sheriff’s spokesman Tod Goodyear reports that he was quickly reunited with his mother, who had left her son with her roommate while taking her other kids to school. He managed to get out of the house without anyone realizing he was gone, Goodyear says.

“This could have saved this small child’s life,” explains Katherine Allen of Brevard County Public Schools. “We are so thankful to have drivers who are attentive to the needs of all children in our community and not just those who ride our school buses.”
