Over a 100 boats gathered this morning for floatilla in support of Cuba. According to reports the captains said they plan to stop in Key West to refuel and then make their way about 15 miles offshore of Cuba. When they get there, they plan to set off flares, Chinese lanterns and lights to let people in Cuba know that they are standing in solidarity with them.
Several U.S. Coast Guard boats were there to keep an eye on the flotilla.
“It is illegal for boaters to depart with the intent to travel to Cuba for any purpose without a permit,” according to an advisory issued by Homeland Security.
During an interview with CBS Miami one of the attendees Jorge Lopez said, “the purpose is to stay on the border, not trespassing, stay in international water and just let the Cuban people know we’re also fighting for their freedom, so once and for all they can be a free country.”
