One of the fondest memories I have with my dance studio, GiGi’s Academy, is having a movie day with my young dancers on a Saturday afternoon to get them to watch Cats.
Man did I have to bribe them! Pizza, cushions, and a dance party after the movie just to get them to show up. But it was so worth it! Not only did they love watching the movie, I handful of them even joined me watching it live when it came to South Florida. For a few of them this was their first experience seeing a musical live or being at the theater at all. I felt so good seeing their faces in awe of the superb dance skills and beautiful singing that make this musical come to life on stage.
I know that, since then, there has been an increase in the dissed interest in taking kids to the theater and in teaching them the real beauty (and hard work) behind the performing arts. But I have all the hope that the remake of Cats, having these these amazing stars like Jennifer Hudson,Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Judi Dench, James Corden, Ian McKellen, Rebel Wilson, Jason Derulo bring characters like Bombalurina, Grizabella, Rum Tum Tugger and so many others back to life, will bring kids closer to musicals like Cats...
